"Shot in the Head" is the story of a family's struggle with mental illness. Dering is the older sister and one of nine siblings of Paul Flannery, who suffered from schizophrenia and then lung cancer.
Using a mix of narrative, photography and email, the book focuses on the Flannerys and how each member finds his or her place in the daily work of keeping Paul's demons at bay as they try to find a road to his recovery.
