NEW CANAAN — The Board of Selectmen has approved a $418,320 request from the Department of Public Works for a paving project scheduled to start as early as Monday.

“He wants to get in and get out as soon as possible,” Tiger Mann, assistant director of Public Works, said Tuesday of Grasso Cos., the lowest of four bidders.

The work, part of the town’s Pavement Management and Improvement Plan, would see road improvements on approximately three miles of road, including Brickwood Lane, Shaker Road and a portion of Valley Road from Hickock Road to Osborn Lane.

Also at the meeting, a second request from Public Works was approved to continue an agreement with New England Paving for $75,000 for localized road repairs.

“We have them do localized repairs, small utility cuts, other areas that are in disrepair that don’t necessarily require to be overlaid or milled and paved or reclaimed. But we have small sections of road that need to be removed and replaced,” Mann told the board.

The work is part of a two-phase process, totaling $150,000 annually, in which the contractors are brought out in the early spring to begin work, and are then brought back in the late summer or early fall to complete work.

“If someone’s driving over a utility cut or a disturbed area, one small disturbed area and they might consider that the entire road needs to be repaved. In this situation, we just need to address the localized repair, and then it seems to improve the rideability and the phone calls go away,” Mann said.
