NEW CANAAN — The Board of Selectmen is contemplating creation of a Fields Building Committee to oversee the completion of field upgrades.

“Just like we have building committees for schools and the Town Hall, these are major projects,” First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III said. “We wanted to make sure not just town employees, but have the folks who brought those projects to us to make sure the delivery is what we desired.”

The committee will include Mike Benevento, founder of the New Canaan Athletic Foundation (NCAF), Amy Bennett, of New Canaan Youth Field Hockey, Robert Spangler, of the Board of Finance (BOF) and NCAF, Scott Werneberg, co-president of New Canaan Baseball, and Nick Williams, of the Board of Selectmen.

The estimated $5 million in improvements would include a re-turfing of the New Canaan High School Water Tower Field, creation of a second Water Tower turf field, resurfacing of the track, more spectator seating, a storage facility and lights for the track.

The field work is expected to be started and completed this summer.
