The Board of Selectmen approved a contract Tuesday to design a sidewalk on Old Norwalk Road between the Kiwanis Park and the bridge next to Main Street.

The $8,600 contract with Cabezas DeAngelis Engineers is for the final survey and design of the sidewalk.

First Selectman Robert Mallozzi said the area would become much safer with the sidewalk.

"This is a major safety concern," he said.

The stretch between Kiwanis Park and the bridge, which covers the Five Mile River and is on the corner of Main Street and Old Norwalk Road, doesn't have sidewalks on either side.

Selectman Beth Jones said she was "delighted" to move the project forward.

"It gives everybody access to the Kiwanis and to the nursery school," Jones said.
