Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County is seeking mature, compassionate adults from New Canaan to serve as Samaritan Volunteers.
Samaritan Volunteers help home-bound patients with transportation needs such as driving to doctors' appointments, running errands or picking up groceries and medical supplies. The volunteers use their own vehicles.
Those who are interested may register to participate in a one-session, five-hour training course Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 9:30 a.m. at the offices of Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County in Suite 114, Health and Wellness Center of Norwalk Hospital at I-Park, 761 Main Ave..
Volunteers will learn about Visiting Nurse's policies, safety issues, different types of diseases and how best to accommodate patients within the scope of the program. Volunteers are provided with ongoing support and supervision by the volunteer coordinator.
"This program appeals to individuals who feel a genuine desire to help their neighbors," Laurie Petrasanta, volunteer coordinator, said.
"These volunteers are special people who recognize that there is a tremendous need among those in the community who are not able to care for themselves at home without assistance. Samaritan Volunteers give of their time to help our patients remain in their own homes safely so that they can enjoy a better quality of life."
