Local resident Claude Bernstein has demonstrated his passion for youth philanthropy by offering to match the fundraising results achieved by the New Canaan Community Foundation's Young Philanthropist group.

"Mr. Bernstein has given unprecedented confidence to these kids by showing them that he believes in their ability to inspire others to support their cause of making grants to support educational programs in our area," said Cynthia Gorey, the foundation's executive director.

The Young Philanthropists group will award more than $12,000 in grants to local nonprofits this spring after spending several months learning about the roles and needs of these organizations, and reading competing grant applications. The students' fundraising efforts include a letter writing campaign and will culminate in an event on Saturday, Dec. 22, and Sunday, Dec. 23, when Bruegger's Bagels will share a portion of their proceeds with the charity. Customers who present the group's flyer when they make a purchase will help the group's cause and allow them to make more grants to benefit local children.

"We hope that everyone will join this effort and shop at Bruegger's on these special days, December 22 and 23, to show their support of this wonderful group of kids. They are truly emerging philanthropists who want to play an active role in shaping the educational experience for students in our area" Gorey said in a release.

The mission of the New Canaan Community Foundation is to promote community philanthropy and help donors achieve their charitable goals. The NCCF provides a way for all residents of New Canaan to make an impact by supporting causes that are important to them and our community. The NCCF responds to the needs of the community and surrounding areas, as shown by the $7 million in grants made to not-for-profit organizations in the past 35 years.
