A New Canaan resident fell victim to an Internal Revenue Service fraud, in which her Social Security number might have been used to receive a tax refund, according to a police report.

The 55-year-old woman told police Aug. 14 that she received a letter from the IRS stating that her 2013 taxes had been selected for identity review, according to the report. In the letter, her name appeared next to one of an unknown person, Maurice Johnson, police said.

The victim said she recently received a check from the U.S. Department of the Treasury for $3,155 that also had Johnson's name along with hers, according to police.

The IRS told her that her identity was used in Indiana and an investigating is underway.
