Proclamation celebrates Constitution
A proclamation submitted by New Canaan's Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter, NSDAR, was signed by First Selectman Robert E. Mallozzi III, marking the 226th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States of America in 1787.
Also celebrated is the 222nd anniversary of the first 10 amendments known as the Bill of Rights.
The U.S. Constitution is the oldest still in active use in the world today and is the basic document of our republic, which protects the individual liberties of all citizens through written law.
The proclamation also marked the anniversary of Constitution Week (Sept. 17-23), which President Dwight Eisenhower signed into law in 1956.
The proclamation asked citizens to reaffirm ideals held by the framers of the Constitution by protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us. The signed proclamation can be seen in a window off the entrance to the Sleepy's at 3 Forest St., New Canaan.
