With the start of school, New Canaan police will be cracking down on speeding and other moving violations near school campuses.
Officers will patrol in marked and unmarked cars and stop drivers for speeding, hand-held cellular phone use, passing stopped school buses, and other traffic law violations near schools. Schools open Thursday, Aug. 27.
Police offered these reminders in advance of the crackdown:
When a school bus stops to load or unload children and its red lights are flashing, all vehicles must stop in both directions.
Follow all traffic laws and take safety precautions, especially driving in areas near schools or bus stops where youth might be present.
Be extra alert and drive slowly in school drop-off and pick-up zones.
Refrain from hand-held cell phone use, both phone calls and texting.
