A New Canaan man who was arrested on drug possession charges last month is now facing an assault charge after his mother told police he hit her two days prior to his November arrest.
Jonathan Steinmetz, 43, of 275 Park St., was arrested Dec. 21 on a charge of assault on an elderly person after his mother told police earlier this month that he had punched her in the arm, knocking her off balance on Nov. 21, police said.
A police officer who was assisting a driver with a disabled vehicle on Mead Street Dec. 21 recognized Steinmetz, who had an arrest warrant issued against him for the assault charge, driving on Park Street, police said.
The officer searched him at the scene and found a glass pipe with burn marks, according to the report. Steinmetz was taken into custody and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia in addition to the assault charge.
Steinmetz was released on a promise to appear in court on Dec. 23.
