A New Canaan couple is facing charges after police said a verbal dispute turned physical in the middle of the night on Elm Street.

Carlos Lopez, 40, of 107 River St., was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct. Concepcion Perez, 27, of 54 Forest St., was charged with disorderly conduct.

Officers were dispatched to Elm Street at about 1 a.m. Sept. 2 after a report of a dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend behind Chef Luis restaurant, police said.

Upon arrival, police noticed Perez' left eye was swollen and bruising, according to the report. The woman said Lopez struck her, threw her to the ground and hit her knee with a beer keg, although she did not have injuries to her knee, police said. The man said Perez was kicking him and he used the keg to block her, according to police.

Both Lopez and Perez had been drinking, police said.

They were released on a promise to appear in court Sept. 2.
