NEW CANAAN — Following quickly on the heels of an approval for paving work on Brickwood Lane, Shaker Road and a portion of Valley Road, the Board of Selectmen has approved a request from the Department of Public Works for an additional four road improvement projects totaling $1.2 million.
The projects include the addition of a micro-thin overlay at a cost of $520,767, line-striping at a cost of $47,761, crack-sealing at a cost of $79,327 and cape seal paving for $583,528.
All projects, with the exception of the line-striping — which will be done by Safety Markings, Inc.— will be undertaken by asphalt contractors Sealcoating and are a continuation of an existing contract with the firm.
According to Assistant Director of Public Works Tiger Mann, the combination of overlaying and sealing maintains the quality of the roads and saves the town from paying for the more expensive method of milling and paving.
“We can go another seven to 10 years out from this technique to prolong the life of the road,” Mann said.
Distinct sections of 11 different roads are set for overlay and an additional 15 will be cape-sealed.
“There’s a sensitivity about our roads in this town for very good reason,” First Selectman Rob Mallozzi said, adding later, “We do place a premium on keeping our roads in better shape. We were probably the worst in Fairfield County 14 or 15 years ago ... Whoever preceded us (the selectmen) really made a big difference.”
Currently, Mann said, New Canaan’s roadways boast a Pavement Condition Index of around 80 out of 100.
Crack sealing is set to begin by the end of May, while the cape seal and micro-thin overlay will start after July 1, when much of the town begins to clear out for vacation. Road closures should be expected for areas being overlayed. The First Selectmen’s Office will issue notices to residents of affected areas before work begins
Roads to be overlayed: Brushy Ridge Road, Cheese Spring Road, Davenport Ridge Road, Grove Street, Hickock Road, Lukes Wood Road, Nursery Road, Ponus Ridge Road, Rosebrook Road, Summersweet Lane and Trinity Pass Road.
Roads to be sealed: Brookside Road, Buttery Road, Daveney Road, Deacons Way, Douglas Road, Fairty Drive, Hickory Drive, Inwood Road, Juniper Road, Orchard Drive, Poquonock Road, Shadow Lane, Silver Ridge Road, Snowberry Road and Weeburn Drive.
