New Canaan Library will host an art exhibition titled" Out on a Limb," presenting two artists' striking and personal interpretations of the natural world.

"Out on a Limb" features the works of local artists Wendy Shalen and Sally Frank. The exhibition will run from Jan. 8 through Feb. 12, with an opening reception on Sunday, Jan. 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the gallery. All are invited to attend.

Though both artists have a wide range of artistic focus and expression, this show highlights the shared concentration of artistic interpretation of nature. Through the disciplines of painting and drawing, Shalen seeks "the living spirit of the model, the air and light in a landscape, the delicate textures and vibrant color in a still life."

Through etchings, monotypes and monoprints, printmaker Frank displays work that is inspired by the natural world. Trees and woodland landscapes are the main focus of her work, as she successfully conveys "the distinctive beauty, energy and sense of balance found in nature".

Wendy Shalen graduated from Brandeis University with a bachelor's degree in fine arts in art history, continuing her studies at the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design, New York, NY, among other art institutions. She was the curator of the Katonah Museum's Artists Exhibit at Northern Westchester Hospital, Mr. Kisco, NY from 2003 to 2010. Shalen has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the northeast.
