The spacious Colonial at 32 Pocconock Trail in New Canaan is exactly what some people will be looking for in a house. It's a modern giant with many accoutrements, set on a sizable grounds on a good road not far from town.

It's quiet there. The property includes a large front lawn, which rises up to meet the house, with a small porch topped by a balcony. Five gables face the front from the second story. The siding is wood and the sash windows are large.

The handsome cherry wood door foreshadows the fine quality of the interior. The oak floors are new and stretch throughout the downstairs, with a nice angular parquet design in the front hallway.

The living room to the left features a black marble fireplace with a large but subtle wood mantel. At the back, a picture window looks out on the rear yard, which is divided by a low stone retaining wall.

Off the living room to the left is a room with a wet bar, built-in cabinets and a ceiling fan.

Three of the walls provide lots of window light, with French doors that look out upon the back. The wall next to the wet bar is largely composed of the handsome brick opposite the fireplace, lending itself perfectly to the ambiance of this room, which also has cherry wood molding on top.

The dining room to the right of the front entrance has wainscoting and the windows are low, opening the space and melding it with the outdoors.

The kitchen spreads into an enormous family room. Polished granite counters work well with the wood flooring. The ceiling is paneled, and there is a stone fireplace, with windows surrounding it.

The center island in the kitchen has a six-burner Viking gas range. There's also a wine cooler, wet bar area and an overall caring sense of design.

A back room off the family area is separated by a double door and contains a bathroom and closet.

Upstairs, there are a range of rooms, including an equipped laundry and a big master suite with its own wet bar, two walk-in closets and a bathroom with all the accoutrements -- among these a double shower with a symmetrical design, a sizable spa tub and two sinks that are widely separated in the big room. The room is marble and granite -- a tasteful mix of cream and ebony.

The staircase to the third floor blends with the large space of the upstairs landing, unlike some houses that make access to third-story levels merely feel like one is going up into an attic.

There is a wealth of space upstairs, including a large bathroom, bedroom, potential office area with a great view out back, and a recreation space that can be closed off by French doors.

The basement is half finished, with space for a gym or other recreational uses.
