South Elementary School debuted a new Kindergarten playground on opening day of school Aug. 27.

The playground was installed over the summer after carpenter bees settled in the wooden portion of the old playground.

The new structure features climbing elements and play platforms, along with a new slide and tunnel. An obstacle course features overhead bars, squiggle knots and wobble pod bouncers. The playground was designed for children ages 5-12 and is made of durable, sustainable plastic and metal. New safety surfacing has also been installed around the new and old elements.

The project was funded by the South School PTC, and no town education budget was allotted or used.

“We are so excited to have a new, safe playground for our Kindergarteners to use each day,” South School Principal Joanne Rocco said. “Keeping the students active and engaged during recess is important for social, emotional and physical reasons.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held the morning of Aug. 27 in between orientation sessions.
