New Canaan residents Trish and Eric Lobenfeld recently hosted a meeting to kick start the Connecticut outreach initiative for Friends of Karen, a children's charity that provides vital, practical and comprehensive support, at no cost, to families caring for a child with cancer or another life-threatening illness.

Trish Lobenfeld is on the charity's board of directors. Friends of Karen is forming an outreach committee to better serve Connecticut families.

"We work closely with Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, and the number of Connecticut families we're helping has quadrupled in the last three years," Judith Factor, Friends of Karen's executive director, said. "We want to be a resource for every family that needs us."

Trish Lobenfeld said, "The emotional disruption of having a catastrophically ill child is more than anyone should ever have to deal with alone. Friends of Karen is there to help with basic day-to-day necessities that all too often can't be met due to financial and time management constraints."

The charity serves families in Fairfield, Middlesex and New Haven counties as well as northern New Jersey, New York City and surrounding counties.
