New Canaan resident Lisa Perone was awarded a $500 Program for Continuing Education scholarship by the New Canaan PEO Chapter N.
PEO is an International Philanthropic Education Organization that supports women in attaining higher education.
Perone, a mother of three, is going to school for her Child Development Associate Certificate via CDAClass.org. She plans to complete her program by the end of this year.
The Program for Continuing Education scholarship awarded to Perone is one of six PEO philanthropic projects. This project provides grants of up to $3,000 to women who have found it necessary to return to school and who are within two years of attaining their degree. Candidates need not be residents of New Canaan, but are required to have U.S. citizenship and be with 24 months of completing their education.
The other projects are the PEO Educational Loan Fund, a revolving loan fund; Cottey College, a fully accredited liberal arts college; PEO International Peace Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for international students to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada; STAR Scholarship, awarded to outstanding high school women seniors.
PEO Scholar Awards provides substantial awards to women of the U.S. and Canada who are pursuing advanced degrees or are engaged in advanced study and research at an accredited institution.
During the past 50 years, New Canaan PEO Chapter N has raised more than $175,000 for PEO projects through fundraising efforts. New Canaan Chapter N was organized in 1963.
