The Tuscan Osteria e Mercato opened the new front of the restaurant in grand fashion Sept. 20 after undergoing renovations to install a new pizza bar.

In an event co-sponsored by Turn the Towns Teal, the restaurant at 136 Main St. hosted a night of free pizza and socializing in its brand-new space.

The Tuscan previously had a gourmet market in the front where the restaurant sold homemade pasta, dried meats and aged cheeses. The restaurant and bar are located in the rear. While the front still has the market, it now has been split to include the pizza bar, which is a long wooden table where customers can sit and enjoy their pie.

In explaining the new setup, General Manager Alain Michel said: "We took away the left side of the main room and built a beautiful pizza bar. We purchased a pizza oven and are now selling European-style pizza, a 12-inch individual pizza either to stay or to go.

"The place is totally different. If you knew the restaurant before Aug. 15 and come back now, you will see a huge difference."

Turn the Towns Teal used the reopening to raise awareness about ovarian cancer. September 2012 has been proclaimed Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Devon Fleming, event organizer and Turn the Towns Teal publicist, said even though the event was not a fundraiser, guests still donated money to the organization.

"Over the course of the evening, I would say a good hundred or so people (attended). The pizza bar was full and the tables were full. People wore teal green to support ovarian cancer awareness. We got close to $500 to support the cause although it was not a fundraiser, just (an event) to raise awareness," she said.

Through September, if customers order two pizzas, the Tuscan will give a third one free. Pizzas are $14 to $16. The restaurant also offers a full Italian menu.
