NEW CANAAN — Bringing people to the town’s center to enjoy the outdoors was the main reason the decision was made to reopen the town’s Pop Up Park.

The Chamber of Commerce and the Pop Up Park Committee announced the grand re-opening of the Pop Up Park at the intersection of South Avenue and Elm Street on Friday, Aug. 5.

The YMCA will host an “Opening Olympic 2016 Ceremony,” to kick off the weekend, beginning at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, with free medals for all in attendance from 5 to 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Emergency Services Department will present demonstrations on extrications and Hands Free CPR from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“I’m personally delighted to see the pop up park make a reappearance this year. A lot of folks view it as an asset to the town to have a pedestrian friendly area in our most visible part of town,” First Selectman Rob Mallozzi said.

New Canaan Music will sponsor a series of Thursday night concerts every week from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., which will begin with a performance by the Moses Bros on Aug. 11, followed by a set by Frogtown Road on Aug. 18.

Also throughout its three-week run, the Pop Up Park will be the sight of a family game day, mini golf, the All Out for Autism Race and talent shows before closing on Aug. 28.

Bistro lighting, new market umbrellas and bases, new furniture and plantings will help to enhance the experience this year, according to the Pop Up Park Committee. The Pop Up Park will also coincide with this year’s Taste of the Town, which is scheduled for Aug. 25, according to Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce Tucker Murphy.

“Traditionally this is a very, very slow time of year. On a personal level I think it’s great if we can use the park to entice people into town and take part in some of the great events we have planned, especially at a time of year when not a lot of people are usually in town.,” Mallozzi said.
