Toughness, discipline and tenacity will be the qualities of the on field leader for the 2016 womens soccer team as the team announced that defender Anna Borea (New Canaan, Conn.) has been named the lone captain for next season.

Borea has been a fortress in the back four for the Stags during her three seasons and was an All-MAAC selection after her sophomore campaign.

"It is an honor to be named captain of the women’s soccer team here with such a hard working group of girls and a great coaching staff," Borea said. "I’m excited to lead these girls both during the upcoming spring season, as well as during the fall season where we hope we get many victories."

"Since the day I met Anna I knew she had the leadership qualities that are needed to be our captain one day," Head Coach Jim O’Brien said. "Throughout the years Anna has grown and developed into a true leader and has hit the ground running this semester in her new role. Anna and her classmates have been tremendous in 2016 and have all been supportive of Anna and the entire team. We are all focused on making the fall season one to remember."

Borea was plagued by various injuries during the 2015 season, limiting her to 11 starts. As a defender she finished fifth on the team with three goals. Her best season came during Fairfield’s 2014 season when she appeared in a team-high 1,882 minutes and was the main force behind the team’s nine shutouts and 0.86 goals against average.

She would lead her squad to a MAAC finals appearance that season and was named to the All-MAAC Second Team and All-Tournament Team.
