A New Canaan Parks and Recreation commissioner is facing an assault charge following an altercation on the docks of the Norwalk Yacht Club.

Norwalk police arrested Richard Kilbride, 57, of 500 White Oak Shade Road, New Canaan, on one count of third-degree assault July 14. Kilbride is the vice commodore of the yacht club.

Police said Kilbride, who was with his brother-in-law, and a Wilson Point man got into a verbal argument over boat placement at the docks. The Wilson Point man's dock is damaged and is being rebuilt, and the Norwalk Yacht Club was allowing him to use its dock in the meantime, according to police. As the argument grew heated, the brother-in-law stepped between Kilbride and the other man, and inadvertently took a punch from Kilbride to the face.

Police said they received a call from a yacht club manager, issued Kilbride a summons for the assault, and released him on a promise to appear in court July 24.

Kilbride has been a commissioner on the New Canaan Parks and Recreation Commission since December 2012. He is a former executive with ING Investment Management and with Merrill Lynch, according to his LinkedIn page.

Neither Kilbride nor First Selectman Robert Mallozzi returned calls for comment.
