NORWALK — Norwalk police charged a New Canaan man on warrants for drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident related to two car crashes that occurred minutes apart in April.

Kevin McDermott, 62, of River Road, New Canaan, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, failure to drive right, evading responsibility and following too closely.

Police said at 6:29 p.m. April 19, a motorist reported a head-on collision on New Canaan Avenue. Responding officers said three cars were involved and McDermott's car had sustained heavy front end damage. Police say he appeared to be intoxicated.

The driver of a second car said while driving south, McDermott who was in the northbound lane, crossed over the double yellow line and struck their car. A third southbound motorist reported McDermott then collided with their car.

Both of those vehicles sustained heavy damage. McDermott and another driver were taken to Norwalk Hospital.

Police said while conducting an inventory of McDermott's car, they located both an empty bottle and a half-empty bottle of an alcoholic beverage.

Moments prior to the crash, another motorist said while stopped at a light on New Canaan Avenue, their car had been rear-ended and pushed into the car in front of them. The offending driver then took off. Police say those two drivers were escorted to the scene of the second accident and identified McDermott.

Police applied for a search warrant for McDermott’s medical records, and say that his blood-alcohol content was 0.3, more than three times the legal limit. Police said blood tests also showed the presence of opiates.

Arrest warrants were served Sunday night at McDermott's New Canaan home. Police say when he was arrested, he appeared unsteady on his feet and emitted a strong odor of alcohol.

His bond was set at $20,000 and he was given a court date of June 14.
