The New Canaan seventh grade girls basketball team kicked off its third season together with a 24-14 loss on Saturday at Saxe Middle School against a very strong and fast Danbury team.
After losing rebounding machine Annie Minaglia to illness early in the first quarter, the New Canaan girls had trouble keeping the active Danbury team off of the boards. Nonetheless, the girls played tough throughout and kept the game close.
In first half action, Leigh Charlton scored on a put back, Lauren Sechan had two steals and Maeve Salvaggi had a blocked shot and a big 3-pointer. Late in the first half, Kate Vaske hit a baseline jumper after a Riley Krug rebound, which kept the game tight at half time at 14 - 9. Riley also hit a two pointer with assist to Salvaggi as the quarter wore down.
Danbury played a better third quarter, as the New Canaan girls went cold from the field despite great ball movement, team work and a lot of open looks.
Shots started to fall in the fourth quarter as Riley and Maeve both made jumpers and Sechan hit a big three to cut the deficit.
