SHELTON -- The New Canaan girls hockey team scored eight unanswered goals en route to an 8-1 Opening Night victory over Trumbull at the Shelton Ice Rink Monday night. New Canaan's first six goals were scored by six different players, and Catherine Granito and Mackenzie Lewis each scored twice.
Granito indicated that the Rams had been looking forward to the start of the regular season for quite some time now.
"We looked good tonight," Granito said. "It was really nice to finally get out here and see how much we've put into our practices and see how well we're doing."

Next, Catherine Granito scored her first of two goals and the floodgates were open. By the end of the first, the Rams had built a 5-0 lead on goals by Olivia Hompe, Emma Patch and Madzie Carroll.
"It's something that we've been talking about as far as hoping we can get some depth," New Canaan coach Rich Bulan said. "Mackenzie Lewis and that second line with Emma Rosenstein and Kylie Glover and Lauren Williams -- if they can put it together offensively and help us out it's going to make a big difference."
New Canaan's first goal of the second period belonged to Corbett Ripley, who scored on a one-timer after taking a pass from Hompe. Granito and Lewis each collected a second goal, and New Canaan took an 8-0 lead heading into the third period.
"It means a lot to us that we can always rely on each other," Granito said. "It's not just one person that's putting in our goals for us. We're all out there and we're all doing a great job."
With 3:01 remaining, Trumbull's Kaly Cronski made sure her team avoided the shutout when she gathered her own rebound and sent a short-range shot into the back of the New Canaan net. Nina Danforth was credited with an assist.
"It's always tough going against New Canaan," Trumbull coach Paula Dady said. "We're going to learn from this game and prepare for the next game. I think the next time we play them, we're going to be a completely different team."
New Canaan's Nathalie Deney and Sarah Klearman shared goaltending duties and combined for 11 saves.
"They do what we ask. I couldn't have asked for more," Bulan said. "They stopped the shots they were supposed to."
