In their first home match of the season at the Griffith E. Harris golf course the Greenwich High girls golf team was looking to make a statement.
They settled for making history.
The Cardinals recording the lowest score in the progam's history Thursday, beating New Canaan 174-201 for their second win in as many days over the Rams.
Following the record-breaking performance GHS (2-0) coach Marie Shimchick was excited at the potential greatness this season holds for her team.
"This is really just the beginning for this team and today we set the standard for the rest of the season," Shimchick said. "I'm thrilled with how the girls performed today and am really looking forward to the rest of the season to see what this team is capable of."
The Cardinals got a great round from senior co-captain Brooke Nethercott, who was the match medalist with a 1-over par 38.
"I hit my irons well today and was really impressed with how well the greens played," Nethercott said. "It was a fun atmosphere out there with New Canaan."
In addition to Nethercott's top score the GHS girls also benefited from solid performances by freshman Alexandra Sazsin in the No. 2 spot (40) and senior co-captain Emma Lunder, who posted a season best 47. The Cardinals rounded out their scoring with Pamela Jennemyr shooting a 49 to make team history.
"This is an amazing feeling to post the lowest team score in our history and I think it is just the start of a phenomenal season for us," Lunder said. "We have such a great balance on this team with seniors and freshmen. We're capable of doing some great things together."
The Rams were lead Krissy Parret and Kate Gihool, who both shot 48 on the day along with Bridget Falcone and Gabbie Balzono who shot scores of 51 and 52 respectively.
Greenwich will look to remain undefeated on the season when it travels to Darien Country Club on Tuesday at 3 p.m. to face the Blue Wave. According to Nethercott the win over New Canaan won't be the last bit of history the Cardinals make this season.
"I think we'll definitely beat this score we had today at some point this season," Nethercott said. "As we play more matches and get comfortable we can be a team that has the potential to win both the FCIAC and the state championship."
