With a dynamic and spirited performance, the New Canaan High School cheerleaders took first place at the "Best Cheerleading Competition" held at Danbury High School on Saturday. Wilton High School placed second, followed by Minesink Valley and Trinity Catholic. The girls competed in the small varsity division and scored high marks from the judges on their clean stunts, pyramids and creativity in their dance routine. They earned high marks for crowd appeal, enthusiasm and facial expressions. FCIAC coach of the year, Margaret DiMauro attributes the team's successful season to their traditional style of cheering combined with a team focus on executing clean stunts, difficult tumbling and sharp choreography.

Melanie Ng, senior captain, won the individual competition, while juniors Emily Lambdin and Caitlin Dwyer placed second and fourth, respectively. This trio's tumbling expertise has brought the team tremendous success this year.

This year's NCHS team includes seniors Melanie Ng (captain), Elizabeth Checketts (captain) and Tiffany Blue, juniors Nicole Giusti, Emily Lambdin, Caitlin Dwyer and Holly Barra, sophomores Bess Howard, Sara Levine, Jessica Laird, Emily Luciano and Allie Tubridy and freshmen Elena Kyriakos, Katie O'Sullivan and Lauren Serena.
