New Canaan Police responded to an accident on Cherry Street at about 3:50 this afternoon after an elderly man driving a silver Lexus allegedly careened into a Nissan Pathfinder, pushing it into a set of propane tanks.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver struck a building on Burtis Avenue before driving through the intersection and striking the Pathfinder.

Fishtales Seafood owner Dan Mallozzi said the Pathfinder then struck three propane tanks behind his business. Mallozzi was unsure of how much damage had been done to his business. Both vehicles appeared to have sustained severe damage.

Police evacuated nearby businesses due to a propane leak.

The driver was transported to the hospital, but his injuries are unknown at this time.
