Marian Rothballer, of New Canaan, won second place in the watercolor category at the 35th annual Community-Sponsored Awards Exhibition at the Rowayton Arts Center in Norwalk.

Other New Canaan artists in the exhibition were Pilar Garra, Elizabeth Nagel, Vera Rahn, Antoinette Vardamis and Suzanne Wright.

Karl Soderlund, who is known for his portraits, seascapes and landscapes, selected the winner from entries submitted by 90 RAC exhibiting members. "This exhibit is comprised of numerous categories, many of which had great depth in the quality of work shown, which made judging very difficult. As a judge, a teacher and an artist, I look for quality and expression -- art that not only is a strong piece of work with foreground, depth and detail, but is also able to communicate its own story. This is done in many ways and is often left to the interpretation of the audience."
