Superintendent David Abbey and Incoming Superintendent Mary Kolek announced Tuesday the hiring of Mary Elizabeth Wilson as the new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
Wilson currently serves as the director of curriculum and instruction for Mt. Pleasant Central School District in Thornwood, N.Y., and has a previously worked as associate director of applied research of the American Museum of Natural History. In addition, she has served as a district supervisor of science for Harrison Central District, science department chairman at Byram Hills High School and as a science middle school department chairman at Horace Mann High School.
Wilson obtained her doctorate from Columbia University, and Master of Education degrees in both educational leadership and applied physiology. She also has a Master of Science degree in applied physiology. Her undergraduate degree is in human performance and physical education.
Wilson's involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives and experience as a researcher and science educator as well as her background with grants and community partnerships will be an asset to New Canaan, according to a statement released by New Canaan Public Schools.
Wilson emerged as the recommended choice of the district search committee, chaired by Dr. Steve Swerdlick and included teachers, administrators, curriculum leaders and BOE representatives Alison Bedula and Mary Kelly Freiberg. A number of New Canaan faculty are familiar with Wilson's work as a result of her involvement with Tri-State Consortium and her recent service as co-chairman of New Canaan's science visit.
Wilson will formally assume her new position on July 1.
