NORWALK -- Several New Canaan and Darien competitors were among the 196 runners to finish the Lightfoot Running Club's summer series-ending race, the 35th Annual Elpern Memorial Half Marathon on Saturday. The 13.1 mile run started and finished at Fox Run School in Norwalk.
New Canaan 30-year-old Lauren Greig was the second fastest female and seventh overall, completing the course in a time of 1:31:48.
Darien had two runners among the top 10 as Bill Ozanne, 33, and Shana Desci, 35, placed ninth and 10th with times of 1:34:47 and 1:35:26, respectively.
The race was won by Bedford, N.Y. 32-year-old Daniel Lennox, who finished in 1:21:09, easily pulling away from the pack. The runner-up competitor was Shelton's Fred Wills, 27, who came across the finish line in 1:24:36. Norwalk's Julie Heaphy, 30, was the fastest female and placed sixth overall with a time of 1:29:16.
The runners were treated to a comfortable 70 degree day with a cooling breeze. Some of the participants were regulars in the series, which featured longer races in all of the six runs, beginning with a 3-miler back in June. Others ran the half marathon with the purpose of preparing for a full marathon this fall. Among them was Greig.
"I wanted to get in a little bit of speed work -- running at a little bit of a faster pace before the marathon," said Greig, adding that she'll be running a marathon in Corning, N.Y this fall. "It definitely helps to know you're being timed and there are other competitors. It keeps you focused."
Greig noted that the Lightfoot half marathon course featured some challenging hills.
"I tried to keep a steady pace," Greig said.
Ozanne has run more than 10 half marathons but found Saturday's to be his most successful.
"This is my fastest time -- great conditions for it," Ozanne said. "It felt great. The only thing is I have to run seven miles home to finish my training for the day."
Ozanne added that his is building up to a longer race -- a marathon in Scranton, PA in a few weeks.
Darien's Peter McGarry, 36, placed 42nd in a time of 1:45:29, New Canaan's Jaakob Gore, 39, was 58th in a time of 1:48:45, New Canaan's Thomas Hynes, 38, was 61st in 1:49:07 and Darien's Kevin Lloyd, 59, placed 77th in 1:53:13,
The half marathon is named in honor of club founder Sam Elpern, according to race director Don Capone.
