NEW CANAAN — The New Canaan YMCA has special meaning for local girl Emmanuella Tchakmakjian, 14, for it’s where she began her training as a synchronized swimmer almost 10 years ago.

In September she’ll move to California, where she’ll train six days a week to compete in the 2020 Olympics.

“They’ve helped me accomplish my dream,” she said Friday during a parade and arts-and-crafts event the Y held downtown to celebrate the start of the 2016 summer Olympics.

“We just wanted to get everyone together to enjoy some activities,” said Nicki Jezairian, director of community engagement. “It brings everybody closer together.”

Face painting and flag making were part of the fun, along with displays of gymnastics and dancing.
