Registration for the 2013-2014 New Canaan YMCA basketball league will begin Tuesday, Oct. 1 and can be completed at the New Canaan YMCA Front Desk. New Canaan YMCA members with an existing online account can also register online at www.newcanaanymca.org.
The league is open to boys and girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade and consists of one practice per week and one game each Saturday from mid-November through mid-March.
"The Y basketball league is all about participation and instilling a love of the game in our community's youth," said Aaron Zimmerman, Sports Director at the YMCA. "Each year we watch our kids grow through the season, both individually and as a part of his/her team."
Clinic programs are featured for boys in Kindergarten through first grade and girls in Kindergarten through second grade. Boys clinics are run by Mike Evans, New Canaan High School's boys varsity basketball coach and girls clinics are run by Kim Palmer, New Canaan High School's girls varsity basketball coach. Participants in clinics learn basic basketball skills through fun games and instruction.
Boys leagues are separated by third grade, fourth grade, fifth/sixth grades, seventh/eighth grades and high school. Girls leagues are offered as third/fourth grades, fifth/sixth grades and seventh/eight grades.
All leagues consist of a 10-week season with 10 games plus playoffs. All games are held on Saturdays and teams will also hold one evening practice each week. League-wide evaluations for grades two through eight will take place on Nov. 23.
Players must be registered to participate in evaluation day. Practices will begin the week of Dec. 2 and games will begin on Saturday, Dec. 7. The season will last through March 15.
Participation fee for the 2013-2014 basketball league is $230 for New Canaan YMCA members and $330 for non-members. Registration ends on Oct. 31 and all paperwork is due Nov. 1.
