The U13 New Canaan Black girls soccer team notched its second straight shutout win with a tough 1-0 home victory against Darien.
New Canaan's stubborn defense and midfield were able to repel repeated attacks by Darien during the first ten minutes of each half.
Taking cues from coach Darren Gourlay, New Canaan is showing improved play with each passing game.
Chloe McAuliffe scored the lone goal with persistence in the box and got her own rebound after the Darien keeper could not hold the ball. McAuliffe's game-winning goal was set up on a long pass from Skylar Severance.
Becca Walshin made several well-timed passes and took two shots on goal that were directly at the Darien keeper. Allie and Annie Neugeboren's quick runs in the offensive end kept pressure on the Darien defense. Paulina Cortina added to that pressure with several shots on goal.
Samantha Hoey and Cali Brannan led a strong midfield effort. Walshin, the Neugeboren's, Severance, Alana Tonghini, Anne Johnston and Niki Orndahl showed good versatility, switching from offensive to defensive mode when needed.
Towbin and Severance both spent some time at goalkeeper to combine for the shutout.
