New Canaan Schools: No threat to community

The New Canaan Public School district has released the following statement to parents following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

"As you may be aware a tragic event has occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that is receiving extensive amount of press coverage. We have been in touch with the New Canaan Police Department throughout the day to monitor the situation. They continue to indicate there is no threat to the New Canaan community. The schools have procedures in place that guide how to respond to state or national emergencies; these include monitoring the communication to which our young students are exposed and providing support for anyone who may be distressed by these events. Please contact your school administration should you have a question."

The Associated Press reports that 27 are dead in Newtown, including 18 children. The shooter is believed to be dead as well.
