NEW CANAAN — A tax season scam has been hitting New Canaan residents.
New Canaan police report that especially older town residents have been receiving unsolicited phone calls from a number claiming to be with the IRS. A computer-generated voice message tells the resident the IRS is suing them, but they can avoid legal proceedings by calling 1-800-998-6734. The person at this number is described as having a foreign accent and claims to be an IRS representative.
When asked if the call was a scam, the caller hung up.
Police said while these calls are computer-generated, there are similar scams initiated by live callers.
How to avoid scams
Police added that generally, the IRS contacts taxpayers through the mail and calls like this are not legitimate.
