NEW CANAAN — Police arrested a 35-year-old Bridgeport man after he allegedly drove drunk with his four young children in the backseat.

On April 21 around 8 p.m., police responded to New Norwalk Road on a report of an erratic driver who nearly caused several head-on crashes. The caller also told police there were several children in the backseat of the car who were not buckled in.

Police pulled over the driver, John Viera, on Heritage Hill Road. Upon speaking with the Bridgeport man, officers smelled alcohol on his breath. They also found four of his children, aged one, three, five and six, sitting in the backseat without any car seats or seat belts.

Viera, of Oman Street, failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody on four counts of risk of injury to a minor, as well as driving under the influence. Viera’s blood alcohol content was .154 at the time of arrest. He posted a $2,750 bond and was issued a court date of May 3.
