The New Canaan Police Department recently hired of a new probationary officer. Thomas Callinan was sworn in on June 27 at the Lapham Community Center.

Callinan, 25, resides in Carmel, N.Y. After graduating from Carmel High School, he majored business economics with a concentration in financial management at SUNY Cortland in New York. Callinan earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in 2009. Prior to being hired by the New Canaan Police Department, he was employed by Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union as a financial services representative.

Callinan will begin training at the Connecticut Municipal Police Academy on July 3, and he is expected to graduate Dec. 18.

Upon successfully graduating from the police academy, Callinan must complete a 12-week field training program.

Callinan was selected from a group of 186 candidates who took the written examination as well as a physical agility test on Aug. 25, 2012. The hiring process also included a peer interview panel, a polygraph examination, a police commission interview, a psychological evaluation, a medical examination and a thorough background investigation.
