On the first day of classes at New Canaan Country School Wednesday, new Head of School Dr. Robert P. Macrae spent the 8 a.m. hour standing outside the Lower School greeting students.

Macrae is just the fifth head of the K-9 school on Frogtown Road, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2016.

“I’m so excited to be here and the energy is palpable,” Macrae.said “Everybody has been so welcoming to me and this is a warm and wonderful community.”

Macrae, who served as Head of School for Cincinnati Country Day School, a pre-K-12 school last year, was appointed in February. He previously held several senior administrative roles at The Pingry School in Martinsville, N.J., including assistant headmaster, head of the Middle School and head of the Upper School.

“It’s very exciting to be the only fifth head of the school in 100 years,’ Macrae said. “This is a very innovative school but also has a very traditional approach to education as well.”
