The American Association of University Women will host George Maranis, a board member of the Merritt Parkway Conservancy, Thursday, Nov. 14, at 9:30 a.m. at Waveny House in New Canaan.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the parkway.

In recognition of its unique historic and cultural contributions, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as a State and National Scenic Byway.

The preservation of the roadway is the mission of the Merritt Parkway Conservancy. Maranis will describe the construction of the parkway and the role of the conservancy in maintaining it and protecting it from encroachment.

He will also address the many issues and challenges facing the parkway.

Maranis was chief administrative officer for New Canaan between 2003 and 2009. Prior to that, he spent his career with Deloitte &Touche. Originally from Boston, Maranis graduated from Harvard University and received an MBA from Columbia University.

He and his wife, Linda, an AAUW member, have lived in New Canaan since 1976.
