"Merrilee Mannerly-A Magnificent New Musical" will kick off the Summer Theatre of New Canaan's Theater for Young Audiences' summer season in Waveny Park.

With direction by Ryan Ratelle and choreography by Enrique Brown, "Merrilee Mannerly" will play Saturday and Sunday mornings, June 14 to July 19.

Merrilee Mannerly loves good manners -- in fact, she's practically an expert. Imagine Merrilee's surprise when a princess from a land of no manners moves in next door and invites her to a birthday party. With her grandmother's magnificent Manifesto of Manners in hand, Merrilee Mannerly is ready to help her new friend, Princess Posy, host the best party ever. Along the way, silliness ensues, friendships are formed, and the two girls discover the real secret behind good manners.

The musical is based on "Merrilee Mannerly and Her Magnificent Manners," the Mother's Choice Award-winning book by Connecticut authors Mary Cashman and Cynthia Whipple. Its transformation into a musical was conceived by Ratelle, who enlisted writer and lyricist William Squier and composer Jeffrey Lodin to collaborate with the authors to transform the book into "Merrilee Mannerly-A Magnificent New Musical."

The new musical aims to make its Off-Broadway debut in New York City next season.

Cashman and Whipple will meet with theater-goers following June 14's performance. They, as well as Merrilee, will sign copies of their book. Merrilee's new best friend, Princess Posy, will also be on hand for photos and autographs.

Additionally, for Father's Day, June 15, each dad accompanied by a child gets in free, and Cashman, Whipple and cast members will be available for photos and a book signing at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at New Canaan Library, 151 Main St.

Tickets for the performance are $20 and can be purchased by visiting www.stonc.org.

Upcoming Theater for Young Audiences productions are "The Little Mermaid Jr.," from June 28 to July 20, with a special show on Friday, July 4, and "Charlotte's Web," from July 12 to Aug. 3.
