A runaway car crashed into the garage of a White Birch Road residence, causing the car and house to erupt in flames Thursday afternoon.
Police received a 911 call at about 1:30 p.m. that a 1991 white Cadillac Brougham traveling east on White Birch Road, went off the right side of the road and into the house.
The driver, a 34-year-old male, was out of the vehicle when police arrived. He told officers the accelerator was stuck and he couldn't stop the car, so he jumped out before it hit the house. The car caught fire, which then spread to the garage, police said. More than a dozen responders were on scene.
The driver suffered non-threatening injuries and was transported to Norwalk Hospital, according to the report.
A female resident was home at the time of the accident; police said she was not injured. She declined a request to be interviewed.
The house, at 53 White Birch Road, is owned Malcolm Robertsona and has an appraised value of $637,100, according to property records. It is believed that the house was being rented.
Police have not identified the driver.
The accident is under investigation.
