A despondent 24-year-old Stamford man who triggered a search of upper Ponus Ridge Road early Sunday afternoon was later found safe at Stamford Hospital, according to police.

Police responded to an initial call on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 6:48 p.m. from a Ponus Ridge Road woman who reported encountering the man outside her home, New Canaan Police Lt. Jason Ferraro said. Based on her interaction with him, police said they believed the man who disappeared into the woods near Four Winds Lane, to be possibly suicidal or on drugs.

Officers from New Canaan, Stamford, and Pound Ridge, along with Connecticut state police took part in the search. The town’s Department of Emergency Management issued a reverse 911 call asking residents to keep their dogs and children inside their homes Sunday night.

Police withheld the name of the man, citing federal medical privacy laws. He was cited for simple trespass, according to Ferraro.

The man was found at about 2:15 a.m. at Stamford Hospital Emergency Room, but it was not clear how he got there, Ferraro said.
