Benjamin C. Ritter, 66, of 57 Bank St., New Canaan, was arrested Feb. 26 on charges of third-degree assault, interfering with a 9-1-1 call and criminal violation of a protective order.

Ritter's wife called police at noon to report her husband had hit her in the face during an argument, according to the report. When the officers arrived, they observed the woman's face looked swollen, police said.

The 50-year-old victim said that when she first tried to call 9-1-1, Ritter took her phone away, according to the report.

Police said the alleged assault violates a protective order that was issued against Ritter as a result of a family dispute in May 2012 when he was arrested.

Ritter was held in lieu of $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Feb. 27.
