Capt. Leon Krolikowski will be New Canaan's interim police chief as of June 28 after he was appointed unanimously by the Police Commission Wednesday night.

"He's an extremely qualified, professional, police officer. He's got a law degree and an outstanding work record," Police Commission Chairman Jim Cole said after the vote, which took place in the Police Department's training room.

Krolikowski, currently the captain of operations, second in command in the department, is responsible for delivery of all police services to the community. He has been a New Canaan police officer for 24 years, during which time he's risen through every rank in the department.

The position opened up after Chief Ed Nadriczny announced in April his plans for retirement, after 36 years with the force.

The Police Commission is engaged with a talent firm to find a replacement. Cole has stated previously that the commission hopes to have a new chief in place by the end of September.
