TUMWATER, Wash. (AP) — State officials say an asbestos removal contractor in suburban Seattle has been cited and fined $87,000 for health violations that put workers, contractors and homeowners at risk.

The Department of Labor and Industries said in a news release Tuesday that American Disaster Services, Inc. of Kirkland was cited for eight violations. The company allegedly exposed workers and others to cancer-causing asbestos during renovation work at several Seattle area jobsites.

The department has taken away they company's certification to do asbestos removal work. The company's contractor registration also was suspended Oct. 7, so it cannot legally work in construction or asbestos abatement in the state.

State officials say asbestos exposure can lead to asbestosis as well as mesothelioma and lung cancer.

A phone number to the company has been disconnected.
