Karp Associates Inc., a building and construction firm of New Canaan, was recently honored with 3 HOBI awards at a ceremony Nov. 15 in Southington.
These prestigious awards, revered as the Oscar's of Homebuilding, are given out annually by the Home Builders Association of Connecticut. The HOBI's showcase the best products and services offered by members in many categories including new home construction, land development, remodeling, commercial construction, sales and marketing and financing.
Karp Associates took three awards in the following categories:

Best Special Purpose Room for home theatre/wine cellar
Special Recognition for community service for the New Canaan YMCA
Karp Associates was founded in New Canaan by Arnold Karp more than 20 years ago and specializes in renovation, custom home building, construction management and consulting.
"Consistently being honored with the HOBI award over the past 22 years is a wonderful nod to Karp Associates legacy of superior quality and award-winning design and build projects for clients," Karp said.
There is an extensive process that builders must follow in order to be eligible to receive a HOBI award. To be considered, candidates must submit photographs and written entries of their work to be reviewed by judges who then visit the site to assess the quality of the workmanship.
Best New Commercial Space - Space NK Apothecary, New Canaan
Challenged with a strict time frame of only 56 days until completion, Karp Associates sprang into action to create a cutting-edge boutique space for a high-end English cosmetic retailer in downtown New Canaan. As the chain's second stand-alone store in the United States, it needed to cater to a high-end, fashion-conscious clientele, but, even more importantly, the New Canaan store had to exceed expectations as the flagship for the growing chain. With other stores located in London and Manhattan, the concept for the New Canaan store was a chic, urban look with modern undertones. This was accomplished by the use of unique lighting, lively colors and an eye catching, translucent shelving system that appears to glow from its hidden back lighting.
The building itself may not be new, but the cutting edge designs and technology inside have made this a dramatic transformation and a model for stores to come. The retailer, who plans to undertake a nationwide roll out of new stores in 2012, is using the New Canaan space as its template.
Best Special Purpose Room - Home Theatre/Wine Cellar, New Canaan
Faced with the challenge of transforming a poorly finished basement into an adult sanctuary that both sexes could enjoy, Karp Associates created, "The Adult Cave," a comfortable space for a married couple to relax and entertain their friends. The challenge was to create a space that would best suit the couple's lifestyle and needs while keeping in mind that it would also have to be aesthetically pleasing to both spouses. Design was paramount to the clients; they wanted more than just function.
The contemporary design is a stark contrast to the upper levels of the house, which have a more traditional, colonial feel. The room has been outfitted with sophisticated technology, including a 100-inch wide TV screen and a sound attenuation system. A distinctive 12-foot long wall of floor-to-ceiling glass displays their fine wine collection in the new climate controlled wine cellar, complete with unique features that include cork flooring, glass mosaic tiles, metal ceiling panels and LED accent lighting. Karp Associates has taken care of every challenge this room has presented it.
Community Service Award - YMCA New Canaan
Karp Associates is a great supporter of the New Canaan community, helping out the local YMCA on multiple occasions. Just six days before the doors of Camp Y-Ki were to open, Karp stepped in to help renovate a 1940s standalone cabin that had gotten little more than a coat of paint in the last 70 years. They were resourceful, using materials from their warehouse and donations from suppliers to rebuild the shed with all the design elements that the staff requested.
The Second Show: A summer storm had flooded the Y's Health and Fitness Center. As this facility is used 18 hours a day, 7 days a week it was imperative to get the facility back online as quickly as possible. So in less than five days, Karp Associates had the space back in full operation, including having the bamboo floor completely replaced, new walls constructed and a water remediation system installed and running.
