HTG expanded upon a tradition of hiring summer interns through New Canaan High School by bringing on Thomassy this summer.
Born and raised in Stamford, Thomassy is a graduate of King Low Heywood School and Bucknell University, and is in the final year of his master of business administration program at Southern Methodist University. His major is a double concentration in finance, strategy and entrepreneurship.
"We're really interested in having our industry -- the independent locally owned, fee-only companies which serve as investment advisers as well as financial planners -- be exposed to ambitious young people today seeking an alternative to Wall Street," Tom Gnuse, co-founder of HTG Investment Advisors with his wife, Jeanne, said. "When we heard about George and his background, we decided to hire our first MBA intern. We had many projects which could utilize his experience and technical skills."
Thomassy said, "I've enjoyed having the opportunity for hands-on experience with clients, helping to develop financial plans for them, working with HTG's advanced financial planning software which helps spell out the options. I've been lucky enough to work with all the senior staff members here -- people who have such deep experience and have been so generous in sharing their knowledge. It's very rewarding -- far more than my previous job as an auditor."
Thomassy also evaluated the management costs of mutual funds, researched the industry to evaluate new tools for rebalancing client portfolios to keep asset allocations on target for individual goals, and evaluated mutual fund performance and potential new mutual funds.
"I've learned a lot about interest rates, bonds, fixed income and inflation," he said.
Gnuse said, "It's an interesting time to see what's happened with issues caused by slow growth and the economy, low interest rates and government policies. We hope that a lot of committed, hard working and intelligent young people like George will come into our industry."
