New Canaan-based Unimin Corp., a North American industrial minerals producer, has won the Golden Hard Hat supplier award for service, quality and operational excellence from Halliburton.

Halliburton is Unimin's largest customer and a major consumer of its hydraulic fracturing sands and resin-coated proppants, according to a press release. The two companies have a 35-year business relationship in service to the energy industry.

Halliburton has a network of 35,000 active global suppliers, but only gives out eight awards per year.

Resin-coated proppants are used for hydraulic fracturing and hydrocarbon recovery.

Unimin is a member of the privately held Sibelco Group and operates 49 mining and mineral processing facilities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Its executive offices are in New Canaan, but its analytical and sales service centers are elsewhere in North America.

The Golden Hard Hat was presented to Kevin Crawford, Sibelco executive chairman, by Brian Bidigare, Halliburton vice president for procurement and minerals.

"Hands down you are a premier supplier for Halliburton," Bidigare said.

"Unimin is the first and only hydraulic fracturing proppant supplier to ever receive this award," said Unimin CEO Luke Anderson. "The dedication of our employees to collectively focus on quality and service excellence has greatly contributed to this significant achievement."

Halliburton was founded in 1919 and is one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the energy industry. It has more than 75,000 employees in about 80 countries.
