Greenwich Choral Society will perform its last concert of the 2011-12 season, "On Stage with Gershwin and More," Sunday, May 20, at 4:30 p.m. at Norwalk Concert Hall. The performance, which will feature the Porgy and Bess Concert Suite, shines the spotlight on American-style works.
George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess hits familiar and popular highlights from this iconic composer's most exciting score. An added element will be George Shearing's Songs and Sonnets, showcasing settings of Shakespeare's poetry, deftly scored for choir, jazz piano and bass. Greenwich Choral Society singers will be joined by soloists Janinah Burnett and Eddie Pleasant.
Bass soloist Eddie Pleasant is critically acclaimed for his opera and musical theatre work, as well as his acting and brilliant comic timing. Pleasant first gained national attention when he appeared with the New York City Opera as Jake in Porgy and Bess, which included an Emmy-nominated `Live from Lincoln Center' telecast on PBS. He has reprised this role numerous times nationally and abroad and makes a welcome return to sing with GCS at May's concert.
Tickets for "On Stage with Gershwin and More" are $35 and $25 with special pricing for students and children.
