Varsity golf

Last Monday, GFA golf defeated King School 7-2 at Birchwood Country Club. Junior captain Dustin Cook (Westport) shot 39 to earn Medalist honors in a close match. Juniors Curtis Tauck (Westport), Charlie Thompson (Southport), freshmen Giani and Piero Panariello (Westport), along with seventh grader Will Lodge (Darien) all contributed to the victory.

Wednesday, April 27, the team traveled to the Masters School, winning 8.5 - .5 at the Ardsley Club. Cook earned Medalist honors with a 42. Senior captain Samyukt Kumar (Stamford), Thompson, Giani and Piero Panariello and Lodge contributed to the victory.

Boys varsity lacrosse

The Dragons faced Hamden Hall on Monday, April 25. GFA took an early lead, but fell to Hamden 19-10. Senior captain Jack Mackle (New Canaan) scored four goals; freshman Will Byrne (Darien) scored three goals and had an assist.

On Wed. Apr. 27, GFA faced St. Luke's School, losing 14-5. Freshman Zach Liston (Wilton) had two goals.

The Dragons faced Rye Country Day School on Apr. 30, falling 18-8. Senior Isaac Manton (Greenwich) and eighth grader Charlie Benson (Darien) each scored three goals. The defense was led by junior Henry Elkind (Wilton).

Boys varsity tennis

The boys varsity tennis team fell to Cheshire Academy 2-5 on Monday, April 25. GFA was led by junior Matt Smith (Purchase, N.Y.) and eighth grader Aidan Helfant (Greenwich) who won their doubles match 8-1, and then went on to win their respective singles matches: Smith 6-1, 7-5 and Helfant 6-0, 6-4. Sophomore Sean Minson (Darien) played well in singles but lost in a third set tie-breaker.

On Wednesday the team lost to Brunswick 0-7. Senior Cole Rummelsburg (Fairfield) at No. 1 singles finished 3-6, 3-6. At No. 2 singles, junior Will Wappler (Rowayton) finished 5-7, 3-6. At No. 4 singles Minson lost 6/7, 4-6. In doubles Smith/Helfant finished 3-6, 4-6; eighth grader Jack Ramsey (Darien)/freshman JT McAllister (Norwalk) lost in a third set tie-breaker and junior Chase Lafontaine (Weston)/sophomore Jason Garrelick (Wilton) lost 3-6, 5-7.

On Saturday GFA won 6-1 over Canterbury. In singles, all six players won in straight sets. At No. 2, Wappler won 6-4, 7-5. No. 3 freshman Jack Wolfsohn (Easton) won 6-3, 6-3.

Girls varsity lacrosse

The girls varsity lacrosse moved to 9-1 on the season. Against Cheshire Academy on Apr. 27, GFA won 15-3. Leading the offense for the Dragons was senior captain Ingrid Backe (Fairfield) with three goals, junior captain Kate Paliotta (Westport) with four goals, sophomore Bella Litt (Darien) with one goal, freshman Nicole Humphrey (Darien) with one goal, freshman Alex Nesi (Fairfield) with one goal, and eighth graders Ashley Humphrey (Darien) and CC Poli (Fairfield) with three and two goals, respectively.

On Fri. Apr. 29, the Dragons defeated Rye Country Day School 13-11. Leading the offense for the Dragons was Backe, two goals; Paliotta, three goals; Nicole Humphrey four goals; Ashley Humphrey, two goals; Poli, one goal. Defense was led by junior Caroline Rintoul (Darien), sophomores Katie Mackle (New Canaan), Litt, and Ryan Morris (Stamford), freshman Whitney Rintoul (Darien) and eighth grader Meg Nesi (Fairfield).

On Sat. Apr. 30, GFA defeated Storm King 16-3. Paliotta had three goals; Litt had one goal; sophomore Sophie Lewis (Fairfield) had one goal; Nicole Humphrey had two goals; freshman Sarah Logan (Darien) had two goals; freshman Molly Mitchell (Southport) had two goals; freshman Sarah Peltier (Stamford) had two goals; freshman Lucy Holzinger had one goal; Nesi had one goal; and Ashley Humphrey had one goal. Freshman defenders Eva Ebbesen (Westport) and Isabelle Jackson (Greenwich) and their teammates were the strength below the restraining line.

Varsity softball

GFA softball faced the Masters School on Thursday, April 28. Freshman pitcher Maddy Canning (New Canaan) and junior Kallie Fellows (Fairfield) singled. The Dragons scored four runs including two by sophomore Celeste Matte (Stratford).

Girls varsity tennis

Girls varsity tennis went 3-0 last week with wins over King School, Holy Child, and Westover School, bringing their season record to 6-2.

Against King, sophomore co-captain Devon Wolfe (Darien) played at No. 1 singles, eighth grader Sarah Wagner (Westport) at No. 2, eighth grader Ryan Boyle (Southport) at No. 3 and sophomore Kate Flicker (Fairfield) at No. 4, all winning in straight sets. At No. 1 doubles, senior co-captain Lydia Picoli (Wilton) and junior Blair Marine (Darien) won in straight sets. At No. 3 doubles, junior Lauren Ritchey (Norwalk) and sophomore Avery York (Norwalk) also grabbed a straight set win. Junior Katie Metro (Westport), senior Faith McDermott (Darien) and senior Olivia Reynolds (Rowayton) also won singles and doubles exhibition matches.

Playing Holy Child on Wednesday, April 27, Wolfe was out, moving Wagner and Boyle up to No. 1 and No. 2. The dropped only a handful of games on their way to straight set victories. Ritchey stepped in to No. 4 singles and also won in straights. At No. 1 doubles, Picoli and Marine grabbed the first doubles win followed by a win at No. 3 at the hands of York and McDermott.

The third win of the week was a 6-1 decision over Westover School. Wolfe lost just one game in her win. Wagner dropped just two games and Boyle finished 3-0 for the week. Flicker rounded out the singles wins for the Dragons at No. 4 with her second win of the week in straight sets. In doubles, Picoli and Marine dropped the first set but stormed back 6-0 in the second them grabbed the No. 1 doubles win with a strong showing in the breaker. Ritchey and York lost the first set but came back strong in the second and only gave up one point in the super breaker to grab the win at No. 3.

Varsity baseball

GFA baseball traveled to Hamden Hall on Wednesday, April 27, losing 1-6. The score tied at 1-1 through the first four innings. Senior Jules Becker (Westport) started the game on the mound allowing only three hits in three innings, while striking out three. Hamden Hall broke the tie in the fourth with a run and adding two more in the fifth inning. Offensively GFA had three hits in seven innings.

On Thursday in a JV game, GFA defeated Brunswick JV 11-0. Junior Joe Cirillo (Fairfield) started the game on the mound and finished the game going five innings, striking out seven. He also went 1-3 with three-run double. The Dragons had five runs in the first inning. Sophomore Sam Stuart (Fairfield) singled to start the inning, with RBI hits by sophomore Jackson Boolbol, junior Lukens Boolbol (Greenwich) and junior Drew Durkin (Darien). Brunswick's lone opportunity to score was thwarted in the fourth inning when Stuart made a running catch deep down the left field line, stranding two runners on base.

On Saturday, April 30, GFA took on King, losing 12-3. Freshman Sean Hogan (Westport) started on the mound, striking out four. Offensively the Dragons had solid games from senior Cristian Rivera (Bridgeport) who went 2-3 with an RBI and junior Tim Mira (Stamford) who also had two hits and a RBI. Also with solid offensive games were junior Chris Glynn (Stamford) and sophomore James Velgot (Weston), both having clutch hits during GFA's third run in the second inning, where they briefly grabbed the 3-2 lead.
